The Asterisk Rule states that

Every rule of Music Theory can and maybe should be subverted. Every rule or common practice that begins “you should never…” has an asterisk that goes to the bottom of the metaphorical page where it says in metaphorical small print “except when itʼs really cool to do so.” Every rule that begins “you must always . . .” has an asterisk that refers to “except when itʼs really cool not to.” Of course, discretion, tact, and technique must be used*.
